    Carol Vanasse

I am a self taught artist who enjoys working in a variety of media.  I share studio  space with my husband Larry Duchene in the Old Armory Building at the corner of Matheson and First Street North. Our location also hosts a variety of functions including art displays in our gallery area.

My particular interests include acrylic and watercolour painting, silk painting, Raku pottery and beading.

.My interest in art has been influenced by my love of colour and spontaneity. In acrylic painting I have found a way to combine two great loves...vivid and unorthodox colours and the wild landscapes of Northwestern Ontario.  Silk painting also provides the opportunity to create pieces with vibrant colour and patterns. Raku pottery is the ultimate in the unpredictable - producing amazing and unique pieces of art. My  beading results in whimsical ,charming creatures.

  • Elizabeth Wires

    Elizabeth Wires

My passion for working with glass started 35+ years ago. I have worked with all forms of glass, including traditional stained glass, mosaics, casting and fusing.

The glass and the natural environment are my sources of inspiration. I only have to look out the window of my Longbow Lake home glass studio to be inspired by the sky, water, and forest. Colour, texture and reflection are all combined in my one of a kind glass pieces.

I discovered glass 35+ years ago. I find the process of working with glass challenging both artistically and technically. I love the technical process of working with glass, cutting it, breaking it and molding it into shapes. Combining techniques, fused glass with mosaics has been so much fun. I love everything about glass the colours,  texture, versatility, beauty, practicality  ...  after 35+ years the love affair with glass continues.

  • Holly Ann Friesen

    Holly Ann Friesen

As a professional artist based in Kenora I draw inspiration from the natural beauty around me on the shield, in the forest, from the Prairie landscape that I grew up in and from my travels abroad.  My visual art practice involves taking familiar objects or scenes and creating something new.  The focus is to create an emotional connection with the subject without accurately replicating the subject matter visually. I want the viewer to be able to access the unknown and discover the subject matter with a unique perspective.

I started my professional career as a scientific researcher in the field of genetics and plant breeding before turning to the arts.  The specific field I was involved in required a great deal of creativity and examination of concepts in the abstract.  I apply these concepts to my art practice where subject matter is examined at a micro and macroscopic level leading to the overall imagery.

I am intrigued by the idea of challenging the audience to see more than the original object or inspiration – to overcome intuition and encourage people to think more deeply about what they are seeing.

  • Rose Wiley

    Rose Wiley

Northwest Ontario is my home and has inspired my creativity. I am best known for my watercolour and ink work. Originally I produced a line of greeting cards with local scenes and whimsical characters. While still continuing my card line, I have broadened my scope to larger works and have been exploring mixed media; acrylic paints, fabrics, papers, watercolour and inks.

Many people have suggested that I must begin a watercolour with an ink sketch and then add the paint. In face, I do the reverse. Layers of watercolour are applied and then I select the areas to define with ink. This method adds a looser quality to the artwork.

The work reflects a light hearted expression of my life experience which I enjoy sharing with individuals and groups of students. I teach in the summer and fall of the year and if you are interested in private or group lessons please contact me between June and October.
